Hiking Forat de Bernia

This time we will go to Forat de Bernia, the spectacular hiking route around the Serra de Bèrnia. It is undoubtedly one of the most complete and with the best views of the geography of Alicante. It is a passage or tunnel that allows you to cross a mountain in the Sierra de Bernia, which extends about 11 km from west to east, perpendicular to the Mediterranean coast.

El Forat, a natural tunnel through which we will cross the mountains; The Fort de Bèrnia, a jewel of our cultural heritage dating from the 16th century, as well as the impressive panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the nearby Mediterranean. All these factors, together with an affordable level of difficulty, make this excursion one of the essential ones in our province. History: fort Bernia was built during the reign of Philip II of Spain to suppress the Moorish uprisings, which were commonplace in these mountains, but when the Moors left, fort Bérina was abandoned. On this same route, very close to El Forat de Bernia, you can see some small cave paintings or visit the castle of Bernia (its remains), also called Fort of Bernia (Fort de Bèrnia), which is located between the cliffs and at the foot of the ridges of the Sierra de Bernia.
